Giraffe Cake Topper

One of the things that I love about cake decorating is sculpting cake toppers. I get to create almost anything out of gum paste, my imagination, and the help of Pinterest. There is a lot of inspiration for cake toppers on Pinterest as well as YouTube. I like putting my cake toppers on a base so they can be saved as a keepsake.

This giraffe cake topper is good for a safari or zoo themed birthday party. It even can work for an adult's cake if their favorite animal just happens to be a giraffe. To get the main color of the giraffe I mixed two different gel colors, wilton-ivory and a small amount (1 drop) of americolor copper tone. The rest of the colors are easy to achieve.

Here are the materials that you need. Again, the base is optional and all I did to make that is use a round cookie cutter with scalloped edges.

To start off the giraffe's body I made a pear shaped body with emphasis on a long neck. I inserted a popsicle stick into the middle and let it dry for at least 3 hours. While letting the giraffe body dry I worked on the face.

Here is me creating the giraffes mouth. I simply used the end of a plastic paint brush for this part, but you can also use a small ball tool to get the same effect.

After assembling the giraffe, minus the spots on the arms, and let it dry overnight. I used a wilton gel food color and some makeup sponges to prop it up. I hope you are having a great week.
